Mission
We love what we are doing, and we have created a clinic in which we and our families would like to be treated!
We are passionate about healthy living and focus on offering the best possible care for our patients. Our patients are residents as well as expats and tourists, and our team speaks multiple languages. With minimal waiting times and a quick response to all medical needs we provide exceptionally convenient service for our patients. Our newly refurbished clinics offers first class care from some of the best doctors and specialists in the area, next to having a close cooperation with the main private hospitals.
Through close communication between all team members, we are able to bring caring, patient centered, evidence based and fast response to our patients. In our clinics we aim to create a warm and safe environment, wanting the best for our patients including to encourage fast healing.

It is a privilege that we can practice medicine according to our ideals that prevention is better than cure, and we love what we are doing. We take great pride in having built two unique clinics that are caring, warm and comfortable and a place where we and our families would like to be treated!
In 1988 Dr. Robin Thomson single handedly founded the Family Medical Centre in Quinta do Lago. He soon became very successful and ten years later he was invited to open a second clinic in the neighboring resort of Vale do Lobo.
In 2000 Dr. Thomas Kaiser came from Surrey, where he worked as a specialist in general and family medicine. On the search for a healthy lifestyle Dr Kaiser decided to join Dr. Thomson as partner in the Family Medical Centres. In this time the clinic consisted of the two GPs, a dentist and a physiotherapist.
In the years to come these passionate doctors developed the two medical practices into fully equipped medical centres with many other specialties, including a dental clinic, and a 24 hour emergency service. The foundation of the success of the Family Medical Centre lies in the dedication of the doctors to provide a personal and caring service and to guarantee to see all patients on the same day.
In 2009 Dr. Kaiser was appointed the Director of the Accident and Emergency Department of the newly founded Hospital Particular in Faro. Thanks to this position Dr. Kaiser could connect the FMC with now immediate access to all diagnostic and therapeutic services a big hospital can offer in addition to the services of our clinic. During all these years the two partners have developed an excellent network with local national and international hospitals. Through FMC you can therefore be helped with all your health issues, either in the clinic or with one of the partnering hospitals (but arranged by FMC).
In 2018 the clinic in Vale de Lobo was completely refurbished and expanded, and incorporated with a new spine and pain centre, lead by Dr Miguel Costa.
During 2022 the clinic in Quinta do Lago underwent a similar expansion and refurbishment, to the standard of a 5-star medical practice. These significant investments set a new high standard for Family Medical Centre.
FMC has become an institution in the local community and in 2023 we celebrate our 35th anniversary. In our clinics local residents, tourists and international celebrities have been treated over the years.
